Childhood
Louis Armstrong was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on
July 4th, 1900. His parents were Mary Ann and Willie
Armstrong. Him and his family faced poverty most of his
life. Louis' father left them, leaving him in charge of taking
care of the family. Louis needed to get some money. He
was arrested on a minor offense and was sent to a home
for wayward boys. There was a band in this home. Louis
decided to join and started learning the ways of a brass
instrument. Once he was discharged, he worked as a day
laborer and occasionally played with neighborhood
bands. He started by borrowing horns, but eventually got
his own, which allowed him to practice. He got better and
went on to a big career.
